Back to the gym

I have a whole different schedule this Fall, and I'm really having trouble fitting the gym in.  Since getting my membership I have mainly been in the gym from 9-10 M,W,TH,F there are no classes on Tues morning so I had been going to the spin class in the evening.  Over the summer I completely got away from the gym and now I am doing MUM's on Thurs., and BSF on Wed.  So I'm having to try some new things, but last night I went to spin class for the first time in 3 months.  I'm so glad they turn the lights off during that class!  I was a mess!  But I did it!

Where has the time gone?

I have been gone all summer!  I really feel like I missed it, the fact that it has been cold and rainy the past 2 days doesn't help!  I've made 4 trips to NY since I last wrote, 1 trip to Marion Indiana, 1 trip to Columbus, 1 trip to Cleveland, and 2 trips, actually 3 trips to KS!  I have had some fun!  No wonder I'm tired!  I'm looking forward to things slowing down a little!

New Plan

I've been gaining weight steadily, it's the first time I've really gained since I started this whole thing a year ago.  I've been really upset about it!  I've got some things going on, stress I guess you might say, medical things and hormonal things.  I'm 45 and apparently my body is preparing to go through menopause.  My hormone levels have really dropped and I'm physically and emotionally feeling the effects.  I'm considering bio identical hormone replacement but not really sure how I feel about that yet.  Regardless what I've been doing isn't working so I've decided to try something new.  I'm joining the Burst Into Summer Challenge at the Sisterhood of The Shrinking Jeans.  I'm going to allow them to pair me up with 4 strangers to compete with other teams.  I'm hoping the accountability and not wanting to let other's down will help me.  I've also agreed to do a 5k with a friend of mine, so I guess I'd better get off this couch and get busy!  Wish me luck!

This week's workout's

I'm leaving for the weekend again, so today was most likely my last workout for the week.  Monday I ran 3 miles, and did some core work, very little strength training.  Tues., ran a mile and 20 min of strength training.  Wed. 30 min spin class.  Today, 1 hour bodies in motion class.  For the past year I have worked with a trainer in the fast trax program that our gym has.  During that time I took advantage of very few of the classes that are offered as part of the basic gym membership, I have also been part of the perfect balance program that allows me 1 appt. a week with a nutritional and life coach.  At the end of May my membership expires and I plan to switch to a basic gym membership.  I hope I'm doing the right thing!  It will save me $60 a month, but I hope that I can stay as committed to taking care of myself as I have with the support of my trainer and coach!  I'm going to be traveling a lot again during the next couple of months, I need to find a workout that works while I'm away.

Home at last!

I think I was home just 7 days in April, looks like all I missed was a lot of rain, and it is still coming down.  Last week I was in San Diego with my Marine son, his wife and beautiful baby.  Isn't she a sweetheart!  Now I feel so out of sorts.  My body hurts in every spot a body could possibly hurt!  Too much sitting, riding in the car for hours, sitting on a plane, not enough exercise, and too much food!  I got back on track with my eating yesterday, did my devotions first thing this morning, I'm going to the chiropractor before I get back to my exercise plan.  Some sun would really help me!

Back to work

I've been away for 2 weeks.  Some planned some unplanned.  MP had a conference in KS, so we went, great time!  I got to see my grand kids, love that!  Then his grandma died, in NY.  We drove from KS to NY 17 hours!  He did the funeral and went home, I stayed for a week.  Needless to say I did not work out at all while I was there, and I ate all of my favorite NY things, many times over!  I gained 6 lbs.!  Not good!  So yesterday I went to the gym with a friend, a friend who really doesn't need to work out and doesn't really like to work out, so it was not a real productive workout.  Last night was date night, MP and I went out for pizza and wings.  Yummy! but did not help my weight gain any!  Leaving the restaurant I fell in the parking lot (embarrassing!)  now my and arm hurt!  I got up to go to take a class at the gym today only to find out that the trainer hurt her back last night, and there was no class today.  I walked/ran 2 miles, then did some weights and headed home.  Now I'm starving!!!!!!  ARGH!

Weekend Project

This is what my dining room looked like when we moved in (and what I looked like 50lbs heavier, yikes).  Nothing had been done in the house since the 1980's.  We got rid of the wall paper right away, but the lovely light fixture remained with us, until this weekend.

I'm very happy with the end result!

Gym Membership

My gym membership expired yesterday.  Now I have a decision to make.  It's not about leaving the gym, it's about the program.  I've been part of the Perfect Balance program for a year, and it's been great!  Life coaching, nutrition coaching, and and fitness plan that most of the time include one on one time with a trainer.  The thing is I lost 50 lbs pretty quickly, and I've kept it off, but I've been stuck since Sept.  I've been given all the tools I need, but do I have what it takes to continue on my own?  I'll save $700 a year by just going with the gym membership and letting the other things go.  I wish I know what to do!

Running

I haven't done much running since I've had a 3 year old in the house.  Funny how different things are!  She went home Tuesday, I sure do miss her.  Today I ran, it felt ok, I'm going to keep working at it!

Gone Again

MP is away again.  He left for Boston yesterday and won't be home until Friday.  I miss him already!  Last year we went to Boston together.  It rained the whole time that we were there, we still had a great time.  I would love to be there with him.

Thankful for friends!

This morning my neighbor friend and I got her twin boys and my grand daughter together and went to the gym.  I'm so thankful for someone to go with!  On my way home another friend called and asked me out for coffee later today.  Such a blessing!

fooling myself

Every Tuesday I go to the gym and weigh in, acting surprised when the scale stays to same or goes up a lb. or two.  I've been in the same weight range for months now.  I'm not very motivated.  I go to the gym all the time, and my workouts have been more intense, but my eating stinks!  I love to eat!  I know that only I can control what and how much I put into my body.  So what am I doing?  When is enough going to be enough?  I've lost 50 lbs.  I want to loose another 35, I just can't get motivated!

Got MP up early on a Saturday morning to take a spin class with me.  Wish they made those seats a little bigger!

Running

Last year I set a goal to run a 5K in November, the Turkey Trot.  I planned to run with my husband and daughter.  I worked really hard, then found out I was having surgery and wouldn't be able to run, so I stopped.  I was really disappointed, and now I'm having a hard time getting started again.  I can't really get motivated.  I get on the treadmill at the gym and run a little, but don't really push it.  Today I realized I have a lot more in me than I have been giving.  So I ran, I ran a mile, I could have done more.  It felt good, It also felt good to push myself.  I've been going to the gym for a year now, and I do strength training with a trainer, so I'm pushed there, but I haven't really pushed myself while doing cardio.  A couple of weeks ago, I started taking some of the classes offered at the gym and quickly realized that I haven't really pushed at all.  So now I know I have more in me than I thought.  It's time to start pushing!

What was I thinking!

Yesterday my sister made homemade granola, amongst other things.  My niece and my sister get together every Wed. and bake or craft together. I had them send me the recipe for granola, I went out and got the things I didn't have on hand and made some this morning when I came back from the gym.  I have to say I'm so glad I went today even though it was rainy and gross outside.  On Thursday's I take a class with a group of other woman.  The class is always different, always challenging, but the best thing about it is being with other woman!  There is something great about getting together with the same group of woman, week after week for the same purpose.  I'm blessed by them.  I wonder if they know that?  Ok, so back to the granola.  I have been thinking about this since yesterday, thinking how wonderful it will be with the homemade yogurt MP makes.  Mmmmm mmmmm.  So I made it.  Note to self "Do not use salted sunflower seeds in your granola".  The granola is good, and I will eat it, however, the sweet nutty flavor I was looking forward to, is missing, thanks to my roasted, salted, sunflower seeds.  What was I thinking?

4 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup walnuts
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
3/4 cup of raisins
1/4 c of canola oil
1/2 c of honey
mix the dry ingredients together, then add honey and oil
spread on a cookie sheet and bake at 325 for 10 minutes
turn granola over and bake another 10 minutes

?????????????

Where has my memory gone?  I really thought that after my surgery, when I was off all of my meds my memory would be better.  In most cases it is, but the last week or two, I have forgotten so many things that I really meant to do!  I missed iBloom's Facebook party, that makes me so sad!  I've never attended on and really wanted to see how it works!  I also missed a Thirty-One online training I wanted to attend.  So many things going through this brain of mine these days!  What do you do to keep track of things?

what the heck

I have the "what the heck"  syndrome today.   I've been eating anything I want, and as much as I want.  Tomorrow, I will be sorry, maybe even later today, but for now, "what the heck".  I'm just going with it!

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Hmmmm

Today has been an odd day.  I've been with people I barely know, and with people I dearly love. I was part of a conversation today in which someone inserted a "hmmmm".  You know the kind of 'hmmmmm" I mean.  The kind where you know the person doesn't necessarily agree with what is being said.  Person #1 "Well, that would be exciting!"  Person #2 "That would be, hmmmm."  So I wonder, what does person #2 really mean, what does that "hmmmm" mean?  Why am I bothered by the "hmmmmm"?  Maybe because the "hmmmm" was said by a person I barely know, about a person I dearly love?  Hmmmmmm.

Girlfriends in God

I'm missing my husband today. He's away for the week. In the past I have traveled with him as much as possible. This year we decided to tighten the budget a little which means he travels I stay home. Today the Girlfriends in God newsletter from Bible Gateway had a great devotithat talks about our about prayer and how NOTHING is impossible through prayer. At the bottom of the devotion it had a prayer to pray for your husband, praying scripture for him from head to toe. I thought it was really great, and since MP is gone right now I've been praying for him more than usual. Sign up for the Girlfriends in God newsletter (here) you'll be encouraged, then do something nice for your husband today. Pray for him!

Thoughts on holiness

Last week our pastor talked with us about holiness and what that really means. I grew up in a church that is considered a "holiness church". Sometimes holiness and legalism get confused, so all week thoughts of what it means to be holy have been running through my mind. Today I stumbled across a blog post (not by mistake I'm sure) titled Striving for Holiness at Walking in His Grace here. In this post Cyndi talks of holiness, saying that it is hard, and that we don't automatically become holy because we've accepted Christ as savior, that we must be actively striving towards holiness. Then she talks about spiritual disciplines, prayer, bible study, worship, fasting. I like this. My goal this year is simply this, to grow closer to God. In doing this, I become more like Him, and more like the me He intends me to be. Thanks Cyndi! What are your thoughts on holiness?

I also like that her life verse is the same as mine, Phil. 1:6 Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus!

New Begininngs

I know it's January 8th and I haven't been on here for months, so I'm reflecting. Looking back over the meager beginnings of this blog and back over my year. 2010 has been a life chnging year for me! Not that most aren't, but this has been different, 2010 has been a year of self change. I've lost and gained so many things. I lost 50lbs, and do not want to find them, I'm still loosing and gaining the same 5 lbs. I was struggling with in Nov. I lost all of my hair, and strangely with it I have a new found confidence. I'm not sure that is really the loss of hair that the confidence springs from or from the loss of medications that has brought it about, regardless of where it has come from, I happy it's here! I traveled the country coast to coast with MP this year and loved every mile of it. I was certified to facilitate marriage retreats for the Army. The training was so much fun, and actually working the retreats has been great. I'm saving money every month now because my body no longer needs medication to be free of pain! Praise God!

So now here I am at the beginning of another year, and like last year I have decided not to make any New Year Resolutions, but I can't help but wonder what is in store for me. I want to leave behind the junk of the past and continue to celebrate the new life that I have been given. I can't wait to see what I have become by this time next year!
